male Downy Woodpecker (Picoides pubescens)
We definitely needed some rain, but a little sun between the rain is always nice. I ran outside to experiment with macro shots with the added interest of all the tiny beads of rain. I did manage to find a few fuzzy leaves which seemed to have grabbed onto the drops and held them like little jewels. I stood up and turned around after having been crouching low to the ground, and to my surprise found a Downy Woodpecker staring me in the face not five feet from where I stood. While I was crouching, he had slipped down to have a nibble from the suet feeder, which I didn't expect because I hadn't seen him in the backyard in weeks. I took a bunch of shots of him but only one turned out nice enough to post.

" I once had a sparrow alight upon my shoulder for a moment, while I was hoeing in a village garden, and I felt that I was more distinguished by that circumstance that I should have been by any epaulet I could have worn."
- Henry David Thoreau
